Development of medical-use polymer materials
and devices for new applications

Newly developed products

Making use of own advanced professional techniques in medical-use polymers, BMG not only supplies various types of biomaterials but also is engaged in developing a broad range of medical devices including dental one.

Principal techniques and products at our development division

  1. A process technology of producing an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene molded article for artificial joints, which can be irradiated and is superior in abrasion resistance

A process technology of producing “an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene molded article for artificial joints”, whose properties can be improved by compressing produced free radicals by irradiation sterilization and which is superior in abrasion resistance, had been developed and patented. Then, the relevant patent was licensed to Biomet Inc. (USA), who intended to produce next-generation artificial joints, which were cleared for marketing by FDA in 2005.

  2. Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) membranes for dental application:
    Glycolide/DL-lactide copolymer porous membrane

GTR-membranes (porous membranes) manufactured by BMG’s own method are supplied to a leading dental-device company. Use of this membrane enables regeneration and adhesion of lost periodontal supporting tissues caused by periodontal disease. Additionally, treatment with the biodegradable GTR-membranes will not need retrieval of the material from the body by follow-up surgeries, attracting attention as an innovative and patient-friendly treatment for periodontal disease.

Also, BMG now is engaged in developing GBR-membranes (oral surgery regenerated membranes of maxilla).

  3. Denture-base resin friendly to human body

A thermoplastic denture-base resin under the trade name “ACRYSHOT®”, mainly containing PMMA, which is processed by injection molding and is patient-friendly with less residual monomers, had been developed.

In January 2004, this developed biomaterial was cleared for production by Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and also in March 2005 its manufacturing license was granted by Kyoto Prefecture, which is expected to be early launched.
